At Keep Gibbons Open, we are dedicated to providing information about a traffic project that is being pushed by a small group of city insiders to benefit the short block they live on against the general public interest.
The proposed change is to close the left hand turn from Gibbons towards the High St. Bridge - moving traffic from Gibbons Drive (33% wider than surrounding streets - and originally classified as a transitional collector for this purpose) to other smaller streets like Cornell, Bayo Vista, Southwood and Yale. The City's traffic study showed up to a 400% increase in traffic in these smaller streets if the changes are made.
To complicate this decision, both a key member of the Planning Commission and a sitting City Council member live on the short 3100 Block of Gibbons Drive. This block would benefit most from these changes - and they have advocated strongly for this change both in public settings, city council meetings and in writing as a late amendment to the original scope of the Fernside Traffic Calming project which is already approved and underway.
As proven in the traffic study, this change will have a major disruption to the surrounding neighborhood by significantly increasing car traffic on several small streets and intersections where many school children walk each morning. These streets and intersections do not have stop signs or marked crosswalks.
KeepGibbonsOpen is 100% in support of safety in the neighborhood and believe there are many other measures that can be deployed to improve safety on Gibbons drive such as:
- 4 way stop at Gibbons & Cornell
- Pedestrian Walk Signal at Gibbons & High Intersection
- Speed Humps on Gibbons
- Improved signaling and marking at Gibbons / High Intersection
The city of Alameda has opened an online survey to solicit feedback on this project. Please make your voice heard!
Note this is the original classification of Gibbons ("Transitional Collector") until the same planning commission worked to reclassify the street.

At the September 25, 2025 meeting, Parametrix Engineer David Parisi indicated that there were 22 crashes at the Gibbons-High intersection. He misspoke. There were 22 crashes total in the entire corridor with only 5 being at the Gibbons-High intersection and only 1 of those involving a pedestrian that was walking.
